The Progressive Tide in Latin America and the Spectre of the New Monroe Doctrine

By: Aishik Saha “They have the force and will be able to dominate us, but social forces can be arrested by neither crime nor force. History is ours, and the people make history”- The Last Radio Broadcast of Salvador Allende The defeat of Jair Bolsonaro in the recently held elections in Brazil at the hands of Lula led Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) marks the latest and perhaps most significant victory in a chain of leftist victories in the continent that the United States has traditionally regarded as its backyard. The long history of intervention by the US in order to install dictators overthrowing popularly elected rulers in the region has left a deep and indelible mark on the politics, economy, and history of the region. American private companies have developed entrenched ...

Left Resurgence in Latin America and Tasks Ahead

LATIN AMERICA: LEFT RESURGENCE, FAR RIGHT THREATS Recent developments in Latin America epitomise the global struggle between a resurgent left, and a powerful, internationally linked far-right, between visions of social justice and environmental protection, and a destructive corporate capitalism bent on escalating plunder. The rise to power of left wing political forces in Chile and Colombia, and the hair's-breadth defeat of the fascist Bolsonaro by Lula's Worker's Party in Brazil have been deeply heartening for progressive observers across the world. At the same time, there are many complexities to this picture including the limitations of 'post-neoliberal' welfare measures based on extractivism and high commodity prices, continuing deeply embedded structural racism and exclusion o...

Panama police shoot targets in Arab clothing in ‘Israel’-run training course

Images published on social media exposed Panama’s police officers shooting at targets dressed in traditional Arab clothing, including a headdress, during an Israeli-run training course. The images, which caused controversy online, were published on Twitter by the National Police and the local Israeli chamber of commerce but were later deleted. The controversy also drew criticism from the Panamanian Committee of Solidarity with Palestine, which said that the course promoted “violence and racism, so that anyone who wears a hijab or something similar can be classified as a terrorist.” They added a request to the government in Panama to discontinue the intervention of foreign countries in training security forces. “This training constitutes a violation of the protocols referri...

Missing the Real Noriega Story

NOVANEWS Vice President George H.W. Bush meeting with Panamanian Gen. Manuel Noriega in the mid-1980s when Noriega was considered a key ally in helping the Nicaraguan Contras wage a brutal guerrilla war to overthrow the leftist Sandinista government. By Jonathan Marshall | Consortium News | June 1, 2017 The death of former Panamanian strongman Manuel Noriega on May 29 elicited few if any tears. But it should have sparked more reflection in the United States on his ugly history of service to the CIA, the hypocrisy of Washington’s sudden discovery of his abuses once Noriega became an unreliable ally against the Nicaraguan Sandinistas, and the George H.W. Bush administration’s bloody and illegal invasion of Panama in December 1989. In fairness, many progressives and mainstream journalists ...
