‘I’ve embarked on this special path for a reason’: How the son of a wealthy Indian family decided to become a Pakistani communist

For Hassan Nasir, a Pakistan without Islamic egalitarianism or leftist ideals would make the new nation nothing but a bulwark for imperialists against the Soviets “I went to India, but after my exile I came back. My family’s lands and riches could not keep me there. Neither could the party, my family had spoken to them that I should work there. Why did I not stay there? Not because I do not like India, after all I was born there and I was raised on what is produced from its soil, how can I hate such a place? But that is not where my struggle is, the laborers I have lived with, learnt from and taught socialism to, they are here, in Karachi. Not in India. Which is why I came back, because I will stay here, so will you. Our grave will be made in this land.” - Hassan Nasir, as ...

Hindutva Goes to Washington: Narendra Modi’s US Visit

BY BINOY KAMPMARK Photograph Source: The White House – Public Domain Again, he was at it, that charming show on two legs, playful and coy. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been burning the charismatic fuel of late, making the necessary emissions in visiting friendly countries. Each time, he seems to be getting away with more and more, currying (pun intended) favour with his hosts and landing the necessary deals. For all the excitement of going to a fellow cricket loving state such as Australia, no one was under any illusion about the prize. Easy gains there on matters of commerce, education and security: a pliant PM, a pliant Cabinet, a political and business class hungering for access to a country which recently passed China as the most populous on the planet. In all ...

What India Must Learn From These Experiences

Freedom Struggle and PartitionFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmailTelegram The RSS and the entire Hindu-supremacist faction in India remained aloof from India’s freedom struggle, instead choosing to collaborate with the colonial British rule’s “Divide and Rule” mission by breaking the unity of the people on Hindu-Muslim lines. That Divide and Rule policy resulted in the bloody partition and the creation of India and Pakistan. Bangladesh broke from Pakistan later. Now the Modi regime – implementing an RSS agenda – has announced that 14 August (Pakistan Independence Day) will be observed in India as “Partition Horrors Remembrance Day”. This is a move intended to perpetuate the divisive tragedy of partition inside India and between India and Pakistan.      Why doe...

India: Demolitions in Tughlakabad and Beyondby Akash Bhattacharya

On 1 May 2023, bulldozers arrived in Tughlakabad to demolish hundreds of homes. The demolition started at 9 am, giving people hardly any time to take out their furniture, clothes, utensils, medicines and other essential items. Over the next three days, over 2000 homes were demolished. The arrival of bulldozers was a difficult sight to behold. People rushed to transport their furniture, water tanks, and all household utensils before the bulldozers hit. They dumped them in a filthy field, in the rain, not knowing what awaited them. By the time the bulldozers finished their work, an extensive area of Tughlakabad, almost twice the size of the Gandhi Maidan of Patna, looked like a devastated war zone. The demolition happened after several months of back and forth between the Archaeol...

In the Sasaram violence case, ex-MLA of BJP, Jawahar Prasad has been arrested. In Biharsharif, the sword is dangling on local BJP MLA Sunil Singh. Days before the Ramnavami violence, BJP supported youtuber Manish Kashyap was arrested for spreading rumours of attacks on Bihari migrant workers in Tamil Nadu, on which BJP was trying to play politics.
