Have your say: Knife Crime. Witnesses said a gang of attackers, many wearing school uniform, were behind the attack at Victoria Tube station in central London.
Investigators were questioning 20 suspects aged between 14 and 17 over the stabbing at about 5.20pm on Thursday. One line of inquiry is that the boy was the victim of gang rivalries between west London schools. Police have recovered several weapons, including at least two knives, from the scene of the attack.
British Transport Police (BTP) Detective Superintendent Ashley Croft, who is leading the inquiry, said it was a “reckless act of violence”.
He said the attack began on steps leading into the station in Terminus Place and ended in a booking hall for the Circle and District Tube lines.
Mr Croft appealed to hundreds of commuters using train, Tube or bus services, who may have witnesses the attack to contact police.
Police were studying CCTV footage from the station and have not ruled out suspicions that further attackers escaped before officers arrived. They are also investigating whether the attack is linked to a violent confrontation between schoolboys at the railway station the previous evening.
All of those in custody are black and the victim was of north African descent and lived in west London. A post-mortem examination to determine exactly what led to his death was expected to take place later.
